Massachusetts College of Art -- Boston -- Massachusetts College of Art is a public, free-standing college of art and design. The college's professional baccalaureate and graduate degree programs enable students to contribute to the New England economy as fine artists, designers, and art educators, and to engage creatively in the well being of their society. Continuing education classes, exhibitions, and cultural programs fulfill the college's public purpose of providing access to the arts for the citizens of the Commonwealth. The college aspires to be a leader in the art and design professions, and to influence the direction of the arts nationally through the accomplishments of its graduates and the creative activities of its faculty and staff.

MassArt was founded in 1873 to satisfy two imperatives-a business demand for industrial drawing skills, and the belief of educators that training in drawing could promulgate both manual and intellectual skills, and yield even spiritual benefits. As crafted by its two founders, English art educator Walter Smith and Boston Brahmin arts impresario Charles Callahan Perkins, the new institution would produce drawing teachers required in schools throughout the Commonwealth, while at the same time producing professional artists, designers, architects, and scientists. The goal would be to educate people in the creative process, not merely train them to draw. It would "impart knowledge," Smith wrote, of "how to draw, not how to make drawings." He explained, "The process of drawing makes ignorance visible; it is a criticism made by ourselves on our perceptions, and gives physical evidence that we either think rightly or wrongly, or even do not think at all."

Its roots in the economic and cultural dimensions of the Commonwealth have ensured that the college has evolved with the times. Technical drawing occurs on paper and vector graphics programs; art education students work with teachers in the field to develop new curricula for the schools; design students return from internships with a sense of what's required out there today. In myriad ways, the school is geared to develop in pace with the Commonwealth-which it supports and from which it draws its strengths-and the greater world.

Salem State College -- Salem -- Overlooking historic Salem Harbor, Salem State College is actively involved in the historical and recreational life of the North Shore of Massachusetts. The city of Salem draws more than a million visitors annually who enjoy the multi-faceted landscape of the city and the surrounding Essex National Heritage Area.

"From business to criminal justice to nursing, the College's academic programs represent diverse and comprehensive courses of study in a multitude of disciplines," writes the college's president, Dr. Nancy D. Harrington.

"A college is far more than academics, though. Involvement in athletics, clubs and associations, student government and the arts provide opportunities to become more well-rounded adults and better future citizens. The College offers you numerous ways to become involved, and I invite you to take advantage of them.

The evolution of Salem State College over the last 150 years reflects and contributes to the history of the nation, the Commonwealth, and the local community. The college is witness to the dualities of obstacles and successes. Constant to the values of its founders, it has adapted to the changing needs of society as well. Although the mission of the college has expanded vastly, its philosophy of education remains remarkably steadfast.

Salem Normal School welcomed its first class of "young ladies who wish to prepare themselves for teaching" on September 14, 1854. The fourth such institution in Massachusetts and the tenth in America, the school was born of the humanitarian endeavors of Horace Mann. Mann was determined to convince politically conservative leaders in the local communities that proper teacher training was requisite to the improvement of public education for all children. Although the normal school system was approved conditionally by the General Court in 1838, and a campus opened in Lexington in 1839, opposition was pervasive. Nevertheless, Salem welcomed its own school and generously endowed the first site on Broad Street.

Salem State College's evolution into a respected multi-purpose institution of higher education, serving some 10,000 students in graduate and undergraduate programs, owes its success to the foundation of administrative and faculty vision, the mutual goals of community and college, and the accomplishments and loyalties of alumni worldwide. One hundred and fifty years later, Salem State College continues to promote and promise the tradition of excellence envisioned by its founders.

Owned and operated by the STCC Assistance Corporation, the technology park leases space to technology-based businesses, and will be the home of the Springfield Enterprise Center and the STCC Entrepreneurial Institute.
